Huguley Spotlights Volunteers
Huguley Memorial Medical Center honored more than 200 volunteers on April 15 at the thirty-third annual Huguley Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth.  Mildred Johnson of Everman was selected by her fellow volunteers as Volunteer of the Year, and Libby Swan of Burleson was honored as Rookie Volunteer of the Year.

“Our volunteers provide a tremendous amount of support to our patients, family members, hospital staff and our community.  They are a valuable part of the hospital team.  We are so thankful for their tireless efforts.  I have great respect and appreciation for their dedication of service for others,” said Ken Finch, president of Huguley.

In 2010, Huguley volunteers served 43,959 hours, the equivalent of more than 21 full-time employees, which equates to approximately $462,000 in salaries.  Volunteers played a vital role in 41 departments of Huguley Memorial Medical Center.

“We host this event during National Volunteer Week to say 'thank you' from the depths of our hearts.  The time, service and dedication that our volunteers give so freely is an inspiration.” Huguley Volunteer Services Coordinator Caryl Bean said.

Volunteer of the Year--Mildred Johnson
In addition to her regular shift in Women’s Services, Mildred Johnson has organized a Huguley Volunteer team for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Burleson for three years.  She also serves on the scholarship committee for the auxiliary board.

A dedicated volunteer, Mrs. Johnson also volunteers at the Emery J. Lilge Hospice House at Huguley and with the Everman Fire Department Support Group for more than 20 years.

“We are blessed with more than 200 outstanding volunteers at Huguley, and choosing the volunteer of the year is not an easy task.  The volunteers select the volunteer of the year, and they’ve come through with an excellent choice once again,” said Mrs. Bean.

Rookie Volunteer of the Year--Libby Swan
Libby Swan begins each Thursday at Huguley by picking up menus from patients, then she spends the afternoon assisting patients and their families in the emergency department waiting room.

“Not only did Libby commit to a full day of volunteering, but she has taken a leadership position on the volunteer board, serving as treasurer,” said Mrs. Bean.

A seasoned volunteer with the American Red Cross, Mrs. Swan says, “In any situation, whether disaster-related or physical illness, volunteers can make a difference to those we serve.”

In addition to donating their time, Huguley volunteers donated more than $35,000 for medical equipment and indigent care, plus an additional $13,000 for scholarships.  Volunteers raise this money throughout the year through vendor sales of books, uniforms and art, as well as sales of volunteer-made crafts, coffee, baked goods, and baby mums.
