City of Burleson Will “Be Healthy” with Huguley

January’s Initiative:  a Community Blood Drive on the 19th

The City of Burleson has partnered with Huguley Memorial Medical Center on its Be Healthy Initiative, a community awareness program.  The purpose of Be Healthy is to keep citizens aware of events and educational opportunities in the community that focus on promoting the safety, wellness and health of Burleson’s community members and their families.

Huguley and the City of Burleson will plan monthly events that address a broad range of wellness issues.  Other organizations and businesses may join their efforts to promote the month’s planned program.

For January’s Be Healthy Initiative, the Burleson Rotary Club and the Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce have joined the City of Burleson and Huguley to sponsor a community-wide blood drive for the American Red Cross.

Because of the support that the American Red Cross gives our troops, the military will be honored at the blood drive.  Burleson veterans including Mo Baker and Jerod Bohon  and veteran advocate Betty Shelton will make appearances to support the blood donors. Those present will have the opportunity to write a card thanking the troops for their service.   The cards will be sent to soldiers with care packages from Support Our Soldiers.

Burleson Mayor Ken Shetter says, “A blood donation, which takes less than an hour, can save a life.  By participating in this blood drive, the Burleson community can demonstrate its appreciation to the American Red Cross for the scope of its work, from disaster relief to assisting our troops.”

The blood drive will be held Thursday, January 19 at two locations:  the Burleson Senior Activity Center at 216 SW Johnson Ave from 9 am to 1 pm, and the Burleson Recreation Center (the BRiCk) at 550 NW Summercrest Blvd from 11 am to 3 pm.

Drop-in blood donors are welcome, but preference will be given to scheduled appointments.  To make a reservation, visit www.redcrossblood.org and use sponsor code:  Burleson or call Victoria Sykes at Huguley at 817-568-5497.

Upcoming Be Healthy events include a women’s heart health awareness lunch in February, a nutrition awareness program with Harvest House in March, and injury prevention in April.   To learn more about the Be Healthy Initiative, including notification of events, go to www.burlesontx.com.
