Huguley Memorial Medical Center honored its 211 volunteers on May 2 at the thirtieth annual Huguley Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth. Judy Hollis of Alvarado and Sue McCain of Crowley were selected by their fellow volunteers as Volunteer of the Year and Rookie Volunteer of the Year respectively. The Volunteer Auxiliary also donated $24,046.97 to the hospital towards a new Huguley Mobile Health Services bus and for requested medical items.
“As we conclude national volunteer week, we give special recognition to the role that volunteers perform in our hospital. Many volunteers serve vital roles in caring for the patients and their families, and other volunteers work behind the scenes helping with the daily functions of the hospital,” said Pete Weber, president of Huguley Memorial Medical Center.
In 2007, Huguley volunteers served a record-setting 50,908 hours, the equivalent of 25 full-time employees. Pat Dupper, the Huguley Director of Volunteer Services, said, “I am often awestruck by our volunteers. First, their diversity is impressive. We have volunteers ranging from teenagers to golden agers, serving in 46 departments of the hospital. Their dedication is so impressive, it’s overwhelming. We have a volunteer who began when the hospital opened 31 years ago. Some volunteers have given the hospital the equivalent of several years of full-time employment. Others return to volunteer after major health setbacks. Huguley is so blessed to have such a loyal cadre of volunteers.”
At the banquet, Victoria Minton, a 13-year-old aspiring opera singer from Crowley, entertained the guests with a performance of opera, spiritual and classic songs. A student at Pinnacle Academy of Fine Arts in Fort Worth, Miss Minton has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City and is scheduled to sing the national anthem for the Fort Worth Cats and Lone Star Park. |

Judy Hollis was selected Volunteer of the Year this year, after being honored as Rookie Volunteer last year. She works in the gift shop, and she served as the historian for the Volunteer Auxiliary. She has just been elected as 3rd vice president of the Auxiliary Board and will be responsible for fundraising and heading the Ways and Means committee.
“To my knowledge, this is the first time we’ve had a Rookie of the Year move on to be the Volunteer of the Year the next year, but Judy has certainly put her heart and soul into Huguley,” said Mrs. Dupper.
“I retired after working full-time for thirty years and came to Huguley to volunteer. I have made lots of friends and found a supportive environment. We work hard but we have lots of fun,” said Mrs. Hollis.

Sue McCain joined Huguley two years ago as a part-time employee. She enjoyed the volunteers so much that she became one. Now, she volunteers at the front desk in the evenings in addition to working part-time in the gift shop.
“It’s a great place to be. The volunteers are a fun, friendly group, and you know you can make a difference by helping other people,” said Mrs. McCain.
